Popular app based cab service Ola is set to roll out electric vehicles across key cities in India in the next three months. This move comes at a time when the Indian Government is doubling down on the spread of electric vehicles and has set an ambitious target of selling 6 million electric vehicles in the country by 2020. Such initiatives are extremely important at a time when the country is facing a severe pollution crisis.
The electric vehicle market in India is currently at a very nascent stage with the Mahindra e2o Plus the only fully electric car available for sale. It is priced at Rs. 5.46 – 8.46 lakhs ex-Delhi and offers a range of 140km on a full charge. Additionally, a few hybrids like the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Prius are also available for sale.
Electric vehicles are the need of the hour as they offer zero tail-pipe emissions. The cherry on the cake is the fact that they are much cheaper to run and maintain. For ex – the Mahindra e2o offers a running cost of just 70 paise per km.
